‘They taking shoes again, which is some real bullshit’

Hello,

I’m doing ok, how are you doing? I hope this letter gets to you quickly and finds you in the best of health and spirits. How is the family doing? I hope all is well with you and your family. It’s ok, I’m doing a lot better now. Just had to keep my faith and stay strong. Yeah, I can’t let them break me down. Just got to hang on. Yes, they taking shoes again, which is some real bullshit! I feel the same way that pod by pod need to stand up and resist this garbage, but most are scared to stand up. Rec time is important and people can’t be getting hurt because we have the wrong footwear. Trust me, I’m telling (people) all I can, but it would help if y’all call and write in about it, please.

Thanks for the info. I guess this is it until next time.

In struggle,

Tanna

‘What’s gonna happen now that we only have shower shoes?’

What’s up? I’m doing fine. I might be on the ropes, but I refuse to go down. Although I don’t know who Ghost Z is, I did enjoy the feedback. It was me that sent the poems and pictures. I know it’s a little confusing to have two people with the same name. Nothing has really changed in this dump other than the fact that they took our shoes, which, in my opinion, was dumb as hell. We hurt ourselves enough playing ball in regular shoes, so imagine what’s gonna happen now that we only have shower shoes? When the inmates in our pod ask what was we pose to play ball in, they said “Buy the shoes off canteen.” Why the fuck do we want to pay $18.95 for shoes that ain’t gonna last a week. When damn near the whole jail has some, then we pay damn near $20.00 for them to sit in our cell all day until rec is open. If they’re gonna assign shower shoes, then they should give us shoes to play ball in, too. But, shit, it’s their world, we just living in it.

‘Sometimes you got to take a stand to make a point’

Hello —

Just give me some damn hot water!

I’m just writing to say thanks for your support. I’ve been here 4 years and I’ve watched the drastic changes and impact you and IOA have had on the jail. Where we won’t be heard as inmates, you all at IOA are definitely our voice of reason that won’t be denied. I had to base on officer Coleman punk ass (excuse my language) the other night. So the cell I’ve been put in, the hot water button don’t work (not that if it did any would come out, anyway), so I have to resort to asking the night-time officer to let me out so I can get some hot water out of the janitor/mop closet just to cook my food. So, this particular night, officer Coleman of the 3rd floor was working. We’ve had problems in the past, so I assumed an altercation was inevitable. Continue reading

‘They got a lie for every question people throw at them’

6-5-17

IOA–

What’s up IOA, thanks for writing. Ain’t nothing changed around here, it only gets worse. I do want to point out that the jail claims that they’re not going to do away with our face-to-face visits, that they added the video visits to give us more time with our family, in other words it’s pose to be a win-win for us. Damn shame! They got a lie for every question people throw at them. If it was all about us getting more visits with our family, then why not give us face to face visits all throughout the week instead of spending money on all this new equipment? Continue reading

‘This damn jail is destroying my family’

What’s going on? Sorry it’s taken me so long to write back, but let’s just say I have not been myself lately. Sometimes I don’t know what or how to feel. Because I am so weighed down by personal issues and with the fact of being incarcerated for a year now. As far as this jail goes it’s still the same slave ship it has always been. These people act like they care about us, but they really don’t. They have made it much harder for our people to see us. Speaking of which, I have not seen my kids in 3 months. And that is the only way I can maintain. Hell, I have a son that’s about to be a year old, and one that’s soon to be 8 years old. I can’t take not seeing them…This damn jail is DESTROYING my family! ‘When is that gonna start?’

Hi,

Thank you for my X-mas card (months ago). Sorry I haven’t been wrote you. It drains me, cause it takes a lot out of me. But, can you help me with getting this stuff out there?

  1. I need my right meds.
  2. I can’t remember when, but some officers jumped me.
  3. My name being cleared. It’s always said I’m always starting things. Officers like Mrs. Solomon, and many more (say this). I rarely start anything. The things I do, I’ll admit to it.
  4. Disciplinary always finds me guilty!
  5. Not getting enough supplies, like pencils, paper, envelopes, washing liquid.
  6. They need to wash our clothes in Clorox since they are washing everybody clothes together.
  7. There’s a video about this jail that they show and at the end it tells you, ‘You will be treated with Dignity and Respect while you’re here.’ That’s funny, cause that doesn’t happen. So, when is that gonna start?
  8. An officer was telling me for some reason how they wouldn’t eat anything from our kitchen. I said why. She said—they’re nasty. Can that change?

‘Still being held hostage from the sun!’

April 6, 2017

IOA–

What’s good IOA? Ain’t shit changed in this hell hole but the date. “Still being held hostage from the sun!” The jail still refuses to treat us like human beings. You know it’s been a whole thirty one days since I wrote my last letter and they still haven’t fixed the damn kiosk in our pod. They come on and look at it like everything is just normal. They’re making it hard on themselves and us because we have to ask for paper sick calls and canteen sheets, then they want to bitch and complain. The medical people take forever to check the medical box and when they do it’s still a wait. But they want that 20 dollars on command.

As far as canteen goes, Pam is cool she tries to get her job done the best she can but wherever they found (the other) girl they need to send her back because she always fucking some shit up and eating all the chips and shit. That high-ass canteen is meant for us. To those that protest for us and was willing to get locked up on March 13 to stand up on our behalf about this visitation thing, I say thank you.

Until next time–

‘DCJ: Same shit, different toilet’

What’s up IOA? Thanks for writing. I’m hanging in there. Can’t really complain, God let me wake up. But as far as DCJ goes, same shit, different toilet. They find a way to make our lives worse by the day. The pod that I’m in has had a problem with our kiosk for damn near a month and the jail has still failed to fix it. Continue reading

Death to Imprisonment!

Hello, my name is Brandon Sutton but my friends call me Sutton (Remember that name) and I’m an inmate who is currently on work release from this Zoo called Durham County Detention Center. I’m here incarcerated on a DWI charge, my third one actually. I was fortunate enough to hire a lawyer to reduce what could’ve been a 3 to 4 year sentence down to 8 months with a few other stipulations given once I’m released. I’m contacting you because they’re others like me currently serving time in here. Non-violent/ non-accidental prone offenders who have several DWI’s but didn’t have the means to afford an attorney so they settled for a Public Defender. Continue reading

‘One voice is but a whisper, a thousand are a mighty roar’

Dear IOA

I am a female inmate currently in custody at Durham County jail. First, I want to praise the work and efforts made to give voice to any and all parties willing to speak out against issues that would otherwise go unaddressed. As a temporary resident in this jail I am expressing the need for all inmates, male and female, to be properly screened and searched. Lice were discovered in 5D (women’s housing unit). The woman came into the facility with them, and was a part of general population for nearly a week before they were discovered. She was given one treatment, placed on medical lockback and virtually forgotten about besides meals. When approximately two weeks had passed, there was a breech in communication. One squad was told she was medically cleared, when she had not been. She again joined general population, only to be locked back until she was released. There have been grievances filed about females grooming and styling hair in the eating area, which is highly unsanitary, but no one has formally addressed this matter. Another issue in the female pod is the constant unnecessary request for toilet paper and feminine products, which should be kept on hand. There is no reason a woman should have to wait for items that are necessary to ensure good hygienical practices. Continue reading
