“jail is a perpetuation of slavery”

My name is Jemar Beulah Jr. You can put my name in this if you copyright it. But to me jail is a perpetuation of slavery. I say this because the 13th Amendment states that “neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall exist on these shores except for a person duly convicted of a crime.” But me and a lot of others are not convicted, we’ve been accused or they’re using the hearsay law and it’s BULLSHIT. Let’s say I get mad at you or anybody. I can easily shave my own dog and put the shavings on your porch and call the police and say I watched you kill your dog and you going to jail then, probably. Well, mostly you’re going to prison. It’s that simple now.

Then they got public defenders. How can they bring justice when the people charged with defending us are investing in our incarceration. And there is no lawyer-client confidentiality. The lawyer will give the D.A. hints. If you be real with them, they’ll tell. There’s no beating this shit.

I’m an innocent man in jail. THIS jail has bullshit food. We only come out 6 hours 30 minutes a day. We only get 30 minutes recreation. The shower water breaks you out and dry your skin out. They charge you 20 dollars for a sick call. Canteen high as hell. COs act like they tough all the time. That’s why we locked down. The police will put you in handcuffs and throw you around like a rag doll and when you fucked up they still charge you 20 dollars. Shit crazy up in here.

Ms Parker, Ms Furgoson, Maye, Kobe, Baker, Sgt. Steveson, Elibi — they’re some staff, but these 7 here are some staff that come to work, do their job and go home. They don’t yell at us. They don’t hassle us about little things. They don’t get buck with us or try to get us to buck at them. THEY’RE NICE GENUINE people and I thank them for that.

Oh, I forgot Sgt. Brown, Jerome, Ms. West -> Well, all the STARR staff.

“a male CO was picking on and messing with Niecey”

First off I would like to thank you and many others from Inside-Outside Alliance for love and support, a lot of people on the outside as well as some of us in here are blind to how we are being treated in this jail so once again thanks.  I read the newsletter that you provided and loved every page of it.  I can relate to all the topics and I agree that the jail in some areas are getting worse.  Canteen is at an all time high and the website to set up visitation is not working at all right now so some of us can’t even see our love ones.  As far as the situation with Niecey committing suicide, I feel that it could have been avoided.  As you may know, we inmates talk to each other male and female through many different ways, one being jail house mail and what I discovered is that a male CO was picking on and messing with Niecey, this situation made Niecey committ suicide.  Its sad and prayers go out to her family, as an inmate and a person who has been coming and and out of this jail for 12 years I can only hope for the best but I know it won’t happen.  Thanks for the letter and I will be looking forward to the next one but until then I’m out.

‘When is that gonna start?’

Thank you for my X-mas card (months ago). Sorry I haven’t been wrote you. It drains me, cause it takes a lot out of me. But, can you help me with getting this stuff out there?

  1. I need my right meds.
  2. I can’t remember when, but some officers jumped me.
  3. My name being cleared. It’s always said I’m always starting things. Officers like Mrs. Solomon, and many more (say this). I rarely start anything. The things I do, I’ll admit to it.
  4. Disciplinary always finds me guilty!
  5. Not getting enough supplies, like pencils, paper, envelopes, washing liquid.
  6. They need to wash our clothes in Clorox since they are washing everybody clothes together.
  7. There’s a video about this jail that they show and at the end it tells you, ‘You will be treated with Dignity and Respect while you’re here.’ That’s funny, cause that doesn’t happen. So, when is that gonna start?
  8. An officer was telling me for some reason how they wouldn’t eat anything from our kitchen. I said why. She said—they’re nasty. Can that change?

‘It’s madness’

I thank you for your letter and I appreciate your concern about the inmates here. We need more people like you! You’re right, people can’t put aside their silly beef to stand together to fight this battle of oppression, suppression and depression. It’s hard being an inmate, but even harder being an inmate in Durham County Jail. They suppress us in so many ways. The only good things about DCJ is the STARR and Grad program, and the psych help because I see Mrs. Kelly for my mental issues and she is a big help. She actually cares. Everybody else I can’t really say that for. But I been locked up in the county now for 4 and a half years and I still don’t have a trial date. I have seen and heard a lot since I been here. It’s madness. I remember my friend J’s ankle was messed up and he couldn’t walk, he was layin on the bed and D.O. Boria went into his room and smacked him for some crazy reason. Craziness…I’m gone. Appreciate the letter. O.B.

Have you heard that the Neuse C.I. went up in smoke two weeks ago? Yes! A lot of the staff from there have been posted here for work until the Neuse facility is repaired. The inmates burnt the place up, especially the processing part. Heard it’ll take months before they get it back up to par.  Continue reading →

How are you? I hope you’re doing good. I know it’s been a little while since the last time I wrote you and I’m sorry about that!! I hope you get this letter as soon as possible.

Lately the food has got better since the new company. The things I don’t like is how they took away our sweet bread and blueberry bread, and how they keep feeding us potatoes. But I believe that now we are eating real food. Aramark is still running canteen, but I think it’s only until the end of the year or January. But before they stopped doing the food, man, the food was bad and to me it seemed like they was cutting costs even more. But you best believe I’m going to hold their feet to the fire on this one. What’s happening? I’m glad you reached out to me. I do have a few comments concerning a few different topics. First I want to shout out the new food company ABL. They holding it down with the new food changes they’re regulating with. After eating Aramark for 3.5 years and now eating ABL’s I truly understand that Aramark are a bunch of damn crooks. Words can’t explain how much of a shame and absurd it is how they’ve got over for all these years on what they served to us as “food.”

Next shout out to Danielle Mace. What you told me they did to you was unacceptable and I hope you push with legal action till you receive the proper acknowledgment you deserve to expose these bastards. Nothing but love shorty. ‘They can’t keep us forever…’

Thank you for writing. How are you doing? Me, I’m doing okay for the situation I’m in. As inmates we all know the food is a joke, there is a lack of supplies, we’re on lockback most of the day, and the c.o.’s should go find another job. Here’s a little something that touches on each of those plus a couple more:

Better Days

I’m sitting in this piece of shit, known as D.C.J.

I swear it’s the same shit like every other day

I need to call a bondsman and get the fuck out

But I don’t have the bread, so I’m sitting without a doubt

We wake up at 6, looking like the walking dead

Only to get oatmeal and some stale-ass bread

Then we get watered-down juice

Might as well be zero proof Grey Goose

Upstairs in my cell, with my roomie

I swear this food runs right through me

I ask for toilet paper, of course they don’t have none

I promise they’re lying just for fun

These stinking-ass people need to take a shower

Because they damn sure don’t smell like a flower

I understand you can’t when you don’t have hot water

It will be cold as ice, so fuck it why bother?

Medical is still charging $20 for a tylenol pill

I could have just traded an item for that, I’m for real

A few hours out of my cell ain’t nothin

I’m not getting any younger like Benjamin Button

And with the expensive canteen in this shithole

No matter what you keep, you still end up with a swole

Finally, fuck a snitch

They’re just as bad as the c.o.’s who work in this bitch

They treat us with no respect

Even the sergeants step on us like we’re insects

But they can’t keep us forever

Our days will soon get better

I wrote this to show my support

Especially on the days we have court.
