New Years Survey, T. G.

On December 11th IOA sent surveys in to every detainee in the Durham jail for over 30 days asking them questions about their concerns in the Jail and what they’d like to see IOA do about it.

 

Intro:

Hello L____.  Thank you and your team for your concerns.  I have written down a few things I believe are legitimate issues.  I hope my explanation is clear considering the limited space in which to write.  I have no family and I am not from here, so it’s good to know someone does care.  Please have a merry Xmas.

What are your biggest current concerns regarding the Durham County Jail?

Request and grievances are not answered in a timely manner.  Ex: We have to submit grievances through a Keyosh [kiosk?] machine.  We are only allowed to submit 3 request. . .  Three unanswered request and the system will not allow us to make another request or submit a grievance. . .  During the month of Oct. Nov. and 9 days into December I was unable to submit a request or grievance because of unanswered request from Sept. . .  After speaking to Capts. and Sgts. For over 6 weeks, the system was not cleared and request answered for more than 60 days.

 

What issue(s) should Inside-Outside Alliance focus on in the coming year?

Inmates are directed to use the keyosh system to resolve issues.  Therefore pod officers, sgts., and other personal who we come in contact with are not required to resolve issues.  Nevertheless request and grievances go unanswered for many weeks with no response in the system, leaving a build up of unresolved issues.  There should be a time limit in place for request and grievances to be answered, and those time limits should be inforced.

There is an arrangement in place when a resident here needs to speak with his/her attorney.  We are to make a request on the keyosh and the request is faxed or emailed to our attorney.  However whenever I tried to use that process I am later told be my attorney that their office never received the request.

Another issue is that I am never given a hard copy of my response in regards to any grievance or request.  I should have a copy for my personal records and not have to rely on the institution to maintain the only copies.

Another issue is the food trays are often soiled from the previous meal.  Ex. grits, oatmeal still stuck on the lids and/or inner food compartments on the tray.  No matter how often complaints are made there has been no improvements.  Please be advised that these are not random incidents which are few and far apart.  This is a daily occurrence, with multiple incidents, and that’s in my pod alone.
