Prisoners in the Durham Jail are complaining of abuse and exploitation.  Durham County Commissioners have called this “misinformation” and say they would be “totally surprised” if inmates’ claims were substantiated.  They believe the Sheriff when he dismisses prisoners’ voices.  This coming Monday, August 3rd, please take a minute to call or email the chair of the Board of Commissioners, the county manager, and the Sheriff himself and let them all know #WeBelievePrisoners!

“I’m ___________ and I’m calling/writing to tell you that I believe the prisoners in the Durham County Jail.  I believe their complaints of poor nutrition, unsanitary conditions, and exploitative fees.  I believe their reports of suicide attempts and medical neglect.  I believe their accounts of racism and religious discrimination.  I believe their stories of disappeared mail, C.O. retaliation, and sexual harassment.  Because I believe prisoners, I am demanding the immediate end of the jail lockback, the end of all jail-related fees, and an independent investigation of the Jail.”

Creo sus quejas de alimentación insuficiente, condiciones insalubres, y tarifas explotadoras. Creo sus reportes de intentos de suicidio y la falta de atención médica. Creo sus relatos de racismo y discriminación religiosa. Creo sus historias de correo desaparecido, represalias de los oficiales penitenciarios, y el acoso sexual. Porque les creo a los prisioneros, exijo que el lockback se termine inmediatamente, un fin de todas las tarifas relacionadas con la cárcel, y una investigación independiente de la cárcel.”
