the following letter was dated June 22, but was received more than a month later. We don’t blame the USPS.

Hey,

I hope this letter finds you and everyone at Inside-Outside Alliance in good health and excellent spirits. I myself am doing great and very happy to know that we have such caring and supportive people at Inside-Outside. I am very grateful to each and everyone of you for everything you are doing for us here at the Durham County Detention Center. Things have changed considerably for us, we are now coming out of lockback 4 hours daily, and as of next month (July), the jail will be working with a new telephone company, something we all hope will be for the better.

The medical department is still the same. We are dealing with staff that are not qualified in some fields and now, as of July 1st, we will have to pay 20 dollars every time we go to sick call. I myself had a brain abscess removed and this is the only jail that I have been to that stops me from getting my much-needed medications that I will need to take as long as I live due to the removal of this abscess.

I do believe an independent investigation of the jail is much needed just so that the public can be made aware of the conditions of many things that we go through on a daily basis. I strongly believe that you have nothing to worry about if you have nothing to hide. I also believe that we should be able to receive books mailed from authorized publishers or book distributors because the amount of reading material we are able to get our hands on is very limited in the library that the jail has. My family lives in —, NC and they are aware of the protests and are very grateful to you for everything you are trying to achieve with us and for the things you have already achieved. As for myself I am still waiting to resolve my case. It makes it very difficult having a court-appointed attorney because they do the least amount possible for us due to the fact that we are not paying them a certain fee. I have been here 14 months and there is no evidence against me, no witnesses, and the alleged victim has not come to court one time and yet I am still sitting here. I don’t know when this nightmare will come to an end, but I stay strong through Jesus Christ and his word because if there is one thing they cannot take away from me it’s my faith in him. Once again, thank you all at Inside-Outside Alliance and may good bless each and everyone of you.
