‘Their own words turned back on themselves’

from K, outside the jail:

“The policy of having people in cells as long as they are makes it more likely that they’ll go against each other, that there will be more violence. Their own words just don’t hold up, you can turn them back against themselves until they’re nothing. Take, my baby daddy, he’s been in there two months, and he’s gotten into a fight with two cellmates now, one, then another. He’s not really a violent person, but of course that’s gonna happen when people are in their cells as long as they have been. You would expect it, for any person. Is that the point? Of course, they say that’s the opposite of the point of the lockback.

They are already away from the community, isolated. Why you gotta put ’em on lockback?”
